Jean Lorentz, President of the Société Schongauer

Jean Lorentz, honorary avocat général before the Colmar Court of Appeal, has served as president of the Société Schongauer since 2000. He devotes his passion for art history to the service of the interests of the Musée Unterlinden. Jean Lorentz has been honoured with numerous distinctions: Chevalier des Palmes Académiques in 1977, Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Mérite in 1986, Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur in 1996, Chevalier du Mérite Agricole in 1998, and in 2007, Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres, France’s Culture and Communication Minister, awarded him the title of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres.

“How can we be sure to honour the memory of the previous presidents of the Société Schongauer who since 1853 have continually enriched the collections and raised the profile of this magical 13th-century convent which houses the Musée Unterlinden? We need to constantly bring our combined strengths to bear in support of this museum, keeping alive our passion for this cultural institution through teamwork, without neglecting the admirable expression of Georges Braque: ‘A work of art begins with a problem and ends with a prayer.’”
