The High Renaissance of the 16th century was followed by the difficult period of the Thirty Years’ War (1618–1648), which laid ruin to Alsace.
Paradoxically, this region devastated by conflicts also gave birth to exceptional creations, exemplified by the museum’s collections of works by cabinetmakers, by artisans working in metal, or of paintings under glass. The Musée Unterlinden is also home to a highly representative group of objects illustrating Alsatian folk art and traditions.
